Schools and offices closed, cars stranded, lives lost in the latest snowstorm of the season.A severe snowstorm that has claimed at least 14 lives continues to move up the eastern seaboard of the United States, dumping close to or over a foot of snow in some places.
Winter storm Pax’s initial landfall occurred in the South, where schools were closed for as much as three days, even prior to the storm’s arrival. Residents of the Atlanta metropolitan area remained indoors, avoiding the chaos of standstill traffic and abandoned vehicles that they experienced during a similar storm just a couple of weeks earlier. Meanwhile, drivers in Raleigh, N.C. found themselves abandoning their cars after icy and snow-packed roads proved to be an insurmountable obstacle for many.
The storm moved up the highly populated I-95 corridor along the East Coast overnight from Wednesday into Thursday, and will continue to make its way up to Maine and southeastern Canada. Cities such as Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston were all buried under several inches of snow, prompting the closing of schools and offices and the cancellation of more than 5,500 flights – along with the depletion of many cities’ salt supplies as communities have struggled to deal with what has been a particularly hard-hitting winter.
