An ancient Cistercian monastery has made Lonely Planet’s list of the most peaceful and quiet places in the world. Ittingen, in the north of Switzerland, not far from Zurich. With more than 850 years of history, the ancient monastery is among the most important monuments in the area. Restored in 1983, today it hosts a hotel complex that combines the simplicity and calm of monastic life with modern comfort. The property also houses a farm, many gardens, labyrinths and other buildings, including a museum that allows visitors to discover monastic life through the centuries.
