The winter season is finally making an exit. The days are now longer, the nights are shorter, and the warmer weather makes for a burst of energy. If you’re like me, you want to use that energy to achieve some big goals.
Here are three ways I’m taking advantage of my increased energy levels and making spring my goal game-changing season.
1. Identify the three most important goals
If you like to set goals, then you probably have a lot of them. I do! While we want to accomplish all of our goals and rightfully can, we cannot do them all at once. In order to achieve our goals, we must break them down. When I begin looking at my year and what goals I cannot go without achieving, I always find three that scream, “hey, don’t let the year go by without achieving me!” This year, one of those goals is getting into law school.
Once I identify the three goals I want to accomplish, I am now able to determine how I want my spring season to end and how to make those goals a reality.
2. Make game-changing steps to achieve three priority goals for the year
Once I identify my three priority goals for the year and what I need to do to accomplish them, I strategically create a game-changing step for each goal. When game-changing steps are achieved, it’s like a long pass caught in the end zone because I am able to move so far toward achieving a goal that once the game-changing goal is complete, the rest of the steps are a piece of cake.
For example, my over-arching goal is to go to law school. Since I have already taken the LSAT, my next goal is to complete applications for the six schools I want to attend. The game-changing step would be to apply to three of them by the end of April. In comparison, baby steps toward the game-changer would be to complete three transcript requests and three essays by the end of April.
By making one game-changing goal toward achieving that priority goal, I now have more direction and I am leap-frogging closer to achieving my dream of law school.
3. Dedicate time every day to the game-changer goal
When I identify my game-changer goal, I have to make time daily for it — even if I’ve only got a few minutes to assess what needs to be done tomorrow. Because game-changers push the trajectory of where we want to be in a short amount of time, weeks cannot go by before we check in on that goal. We have to outline a daily check-in time to access the successes and failures of achieving that goal.
Achieving a challenging goal isn’t always hard but it can be complex. It requires planning time to break it down to baby steps. Game-changers are like giant leaps and require more dedication, but once we achieve them, we feel so much better because we’ve increased the momentum toward our result. Also, we free up more time to focus on other important goals.
