Caring, calm and compassionate, sometimes crushed by pain and suffering. This is what Mary looks like in paintings representing the Pieta, or the figure of Mother cradling in her arms the Body of Jesus, deposited from the cross. Sculptures are the most popular works of art of this type; everyone is familiar with the world-famous Pieta fashioned by Michelangelo in white marble, to be seen at the Vatican.

The suffering of the Mother of God and her relation with her Son has been a topic frequently addressed in Western and Eastern painting. Aleteia presents a few paintings and icons that may prompt you to contemplate the pivotal events of Holy Week.
