Comedian Gaffigan says he went from being the receiver to the giver.Comedian Jim Gaffigan was accustomed to letting his wife run the show, but when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor it was his turn to take the lead.

While taking her kids for a routine trip to the pediatrician, the doctors noticed that Jeannie was having trouble hearing from one ear, a symptom that prompted an investigation into what turned out to be a large brain tumor. “I started bargaining with God,” Jeannie said. “‘I’ll do anything to just be alive and make it through this.'”

After a tracheotomy left Jeannie weak, Jim knew he had to rise to the occasion. “Our entire marriage has been Jeannie being this incredible support system. So it’s the least I could do.” Some people might think it’s impossible to bring humor to such a situation, but those people haven’t met the Gaffigans. Jeannie says her husband’s optimism and relentless sense of humor “elevated a situation that could have been horrible.”

“It’s an honor to get the opportunity to be there for someone,” Jim says. Her recovery now behind them, Jim says he’s glad to have his “super Jeannie” back and ready to run the show again.
