In the Roman Catholic Church, there exists the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. It is a feast day normally celebrated on the last Sunday of Ordinary Time, which always occurs near the end of November. (As a note, the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite celebrates a similar feast on the last Sunday of October.)
The feast marks the end of the liturgical year and signals the coming season of Advent. The spiritual theme of Jesus as a "King," recalls the reality that God is the sovereign Lord of all creation. All rulers in this world are secondary to God, and our allegiance is always given to him first, before it is given to any earthly leader.
At the same time, it also reminds us that God should be King of our hearts, guiding and protecting us along the path of virtue. He is a just and merciful King, boundless in love and worthy of our allegiance.
As we prepare for this great feast, let us pray this novena prayer to Christ the King.
