St. Leo the Great was an energetic pope who opposed the remnants of paganism and fought against heresy. His advice, given in wise and refined words, had an impact on everyone, believers and non-believers alike. Even today, his words are relevant and resonate with us.
Pope Leo I, the first to receive the title of “Great,” always remembered to live and teach solid values, such as love, friendship, patience, tolerance, mercy, and humility. He left his most famous mark on history when he was appointed in 452 by Emperor Valentinian III to lead the Roman diplomatic delegation in its efforts to convince the terrifying king of the Huns, Attila, not to attack Rome and to retreat from Italy. Leo convinced him, thus gaining the respect of all the inhabitants of the peninsula.
He was very influential, winning over the people not only with that important historical event, but also by being a “good shepherd” who taught the other “shepherds” to be so in turn. Here are some of his most memorable phrases, which help us understand and imitate his holiness.
