The eclipse was a whole lot of fun while it lasted, but now that it has come and gone we are left with fond memories and an abundance of cardboard eclipse glasses. Before you take yours to the trash can, you may want to consider donating them to Astronomers Without Borders, who will make sure they find their way into the hands of children in Asia and South America, where there will be another solar eclipse in two years.

Gizmodo reports that Astronomers Without Borders, whose mission is to provide astronomy-related education and equipment for developing countries, is gathering all the eclipse glasses they can so that children without the means will not miss the chance to take part in such a rare educational world event.

President of Astronomers Without Borders Mike Simmons spoke to Gizmodo about their effort:

This is an opportunity for schools to have a first-hand science experience that they might not otherwise have. Many schools in developing countries don’t have resources for science education and this is a rare opportunity that inspires students and teachers and shows them that science is something they can do. It can be a ray of hope for young people who don’t otherwise see a path to a career like this.

AWB does not yet have a mailing address devoted to collecting eclipse glasses, but they will soon, so hold on to yours. If you’re anxious to send them before you forget, you can send them to AWB’s corporate sponsor, Explore Scientific, at 621 Madison Street, Springdale, Arkansas.
