I've heard it said that “Heaven is a garden,” and it certainly feels that way when I’m at my local community garden. My children delight in sloshing water over the plants, digging messily for weeds, and making mud pies to their hearts’ content in the “mud kitchen” area. Meanwhile, I enjoy talking with friends and bringing home fresh produce.

We certainly are not professionals at this gardening gig. Seeds are dumped willy-nilly by overly eager toddlers. Plants are sometimes overwatered by zealous kids, or neglected for too long. I have to Google how to do basic gardening tasks way more often than I want to admit.

But there’s something about being in a garden that reveals God’s glorious abundance. All of us are happy there, as we participate in something bigger than ourselves, something that connects us to our local community and to God’s green earth.

If you’ve ever thought about joining a community garden, here are 5 reasons to hop on the bandwagon. And if your community doesn’t have a garden, consider this your little nudge from God to start one. You won’t regret it!
